Job Description:

The Racine Urban Garden Network (RUGN) is seeking a volunteer coordinator to manage all elements of volunteering within our organization as well as to recruit new volunteers from the community. The role involves assessing RUGN’s needs and then meeting those needs through the recruitment, placement and retention of volunteers. The volunteer coordinator will manage, monitor, and evaluate RUGN volunteers.

Typical work activities

  • Researching and writing volunteer policies and procedures.
  • Collaborating with community organizations in order to build relationships, develop partnerships, and recruit volunteers (e.g. churches, non-profits, schools, etc.)
  • Generating appropriate volunteering opportunities and role descriptions based on RUGN’s needs
  • Raising staff awareness of the role and function of volunteers.
  • Ensuring there is appropriate support and training for volunteers.
  • Promoting volunteering (internally and externally) through recruitment and publicity strategies and campaigns.
  • Monitoring, supporting, and motivating volunteers and their work.
  • Celebrating volunteering by nominating volunteers for awards and organizing celebration events.
  • Offering advice and information to volunteers and external organizations through face-to-face, telephone and email contact.
  • Collaborating with RUGN’s Education & Event Committee to develop profile-raising events to attract new volunteers.
  • Attending committees and meetings.
  • Monitoring, tracking, and evaluating all volunteer activities and writing reports for funders and trustees.
  • Maintaining databases and undertaking any other administrative duties as needed.

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Capable of coordinating efforts within RUGN and with the Racine community
  • Practiced oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong time management skills
  • Independently motivated
  • Must be available some evenings and weekends

*Interest in urban gardening, farming or environmental stewardship is desired
