Choral Arts Society

The Choral Arts Society of Southeastern Wisconsin is an auditioned volunteer community chorus of between 60 and 70 singers. We are dedicated to providing exposure to and performance of diverse styles of choral music to benefit the singer and the community. The repertoire has included major classical choral works, operettas, show tunes, gospel, and original works by contemporary and local composers. Rehearsals are held at St. Luke?s Episcopal Church in Racine on Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The performance and rehearsal season generally runs from late August through May, and we present four concert programs each season. Some singers have post high school musical training, and several are music teachers and directors in other organizations. We are a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation with a board of directors. We are always open to auditioning new singers. We frequently seek volunteers to usher and to serve on committees and/or on the board.

The Choral Arts Society was established in 1987 by founder and Artistic Director, James Schatzman. In 2000 the name changed to Choral Arts Society of Southeastern Wisconsin to reflect broadened repertoire and larger geographical reach. The Choral Arts Society provides exposure to and performance of diverse styles of choral music to benefit the singer and the community. By performing in accessible venues throughout the region, and through involvement in educational outreach, CAS demonstrates its commitment to enriching the cultural environment of the community. CAS has commissioned new works, performed premieres, and seeks to be innovative while honoring classic masterworks. In addition to the premieres of works by John Knowles Paine and Amy Beach, the Choral Arts Society has presented Midwest premieres of the orchestrated version of Glenn Burleigh?s Alpha Mass and emotionally charged performances of Burleigh?s Lamentation and Celebration and Let God Arise. CAS commissions include world premieres of Welcome All Wonders and Concord Hymn by Carol Barnett, She Is One Of Us by Native American composer Brent Michael Davids, Shepherd?s Gloria by Gregory Berg, Julius the Baby of the World by Scott & Michelle Dalziel with Gregory Berg, Sound Poem inspired by Nosferatu by Karel Suchy. Collaborators have included the RSO, MSO, UW-Parkside, Scott & Michelle Dalziel, Over our Head Players, Mark Paffrath, Jeff Ward, and many others. The chorus repertoire includes masterworks by Handel, Brahms, Haydn, Mozart, Faure, Orff, Beethoven, Bach, Mendelssohn, Vivaldi and Vaughan Williams, as well as theatrical pieces by Menotti, Gershwin, Gilbert & Sullivan, Bernstein, Schoenberg, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Lerner & Lowe, and Rogers & Hammerstein.
