This afterschool program provides children in Grades 2-5 age-appropriate academic support, leadership development, positive role models and recreational opportunities. As a result of participating in Young Leaders Academy, participants achieve success in core subjects (tests, grades, etc.), demonstrate positive school behavior, attend school regularly, and improve social functioning. In addition to School Achievers (Grades 2-5), the Young Leaders Academy also includes programming for middle school students through the Young Achievers program for Grades 6-8 and high school students through the Teen Achievers program for Grades 9-12.
The School Achiever program for 2nd – 5th graders provides homework assistance, tutoring, character development and leadership group sessions and activities. The traditional School Achievers component is located at up to four Racine Unified School District (RUSD) school site locations. The program typically runs Mondays – Thursdays from afterschool until 5:30 pm. Up to 250 participants are served annually.
Students are referred to the program by their school teacher or school leadership; parents may also contact the Racine Family YMCA's Young Leaders Academy Coordinator to enroll their child.
