Tax Prepares and Volunteers Need for VITA program

What is VITA?

United Way of Racine County's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax preparation and electronic filing for low-to-moderate income and limited English-speaking Racine County residents.

What volunteer opportunities are available?

• Greeter - welcomes clients and ensures that tax filers have all of their paperwork

• Bilingual Interpreter - assists with communication between tax preparer and client

• Tax Preparer* - prepares accurate tax returns

• Quality Reviewer* - double checks every prepared tax return and reviews the finished returns with taxpayers

• Site Coordinator and Assistant Site Coordinator* - ensures that VITA rules and regulations are followed at every site and provides assistance

• Intake Specialist* - interviews the taxpayers and reviews documents to prepare for tax preparation

All volunteers must pass a background check, regardless of their role.

Is any prior experience needed?

No prior experience is necessary for all positions. A variety of volunteer roles are available, and not all positions require tax certification. We are seeking bilingual volunteers in any capacity to help assist our Spanish-speaking clientele. Volunteers must pass an IRS certification exam if working directly with taxes. Training is offered to ensure volunteers are prepared to obtain certification.

What is the time commitment?

We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of a single two to four hour shift per week during tax season (January through April 15). Training is specific to your role and can be done in-person, virtually or self-guided. Applications are currently open and will close on Dec. 17.
