Root Pike Watershed Initiative Network

Root-Pike WIN's services area of the EPA-designated Root-Pike Watershed includes five watersheds and approximately 300,000 people: Root River Watershed--169,420 Oak Creek Watershed--51,033 Wind Point Watershed--1,800 Pike River Watershed--56,300 Pike Creek Watershed--24,558 Root-Pike WIN's current projects include the Watershed-based Grant Program which awards approximately $50,000 to other nonprofit organizations annually for projects that meet its mission. In addition, Root-Pike WIN is leading the development of watershed restoration plans for the Pike River, Root River and Wind Point Watersheds. Through its Greener Yards, Cleaner Waters program, the organization has funded 102 rain gardens that are reducing stormwater pollution by infiltrating nearly 1 million gallons of rainwater and snow-ice melt each year. The program also offers workshops and an E-newsletter that educate people about actions they can take in their yards to improve water quality in our streams, rivers and lakes by reducing polluted stormwater runoff. Since 2012 Root-Pike WIN in partnership with the SE WI Watersheds Trust has led the Respect Our Waters campaign that features TV ads and community outreach events. For the past three years, Root-Pike WIN has partnered with local environmental organizations to offer the Root River Paddle event.

Root-Pike WIN's mission is to protect, restore and sustain the ecosystem of the Root-Pike watershed through grant funding and the facilitation of a regional network of locally initiated projects. In 1998, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources convened a group of individuals and organizations with natural resource concerns and responsibilities to identify critical natural resource issues in the Root and Pike River watersheds. In 2000 the group led the formation of the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network. In 2001 Root-Pike WIN implemented the Watershed-based Grant Program and funded its first projects.
