Companion Volunteers enrich the lives of hospice patients in their area through regular visits by providing an additional level of care that focuses on socialization and friendship! How your visits look is entirely up to you! Service hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location. A visit may look like playing card games, watching a movie, enjoying a leisurely stroll, or even just engaging in lively conversation! Heartland Hospice is looking to expand its superstar volunteer team in Kenosha and Racine counties!

As a member of the We Honor Veteran's program, we at Heartland Hospice pride ourselves in giving our veteran patients the unique opportunity of being matched with a hospice-trained veteran who may have a similar background. Our Vets for Vets program expands upon our Companion Volunteer program by focusing specifically on the relationship and bonds only veterans can share among themselves.

All patient visitation volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, and helpful skills in caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Volunteers in our veterans program also receive additional training focused on veteran's specific needs.

Veteran Volunteer Requirements:

Heartland Hospice is looking for more pet/handler teams to enrich the lives of our hospice patients in Kenosha and Racine counties. 

Therapy dog teams make regular visits to provide companionship and meaningful support between animal and patient. Hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location. Volunteers and their furry companions have the power to bring the greatest gifts to our patients--a smile and reassurance that comes with knowing they are genuinely cared for. 

If your dog is currently certified through an approved therapy animal agency, you can apply immediately to become a Heartland Hospice Pet Volunteer. If your pet is not yet certified, we are happy to assit you with the process. Once your pet is certified and registered, you will be trained to become a Heartland Hospice Volunteer. 

Pet Therapy Volunteer requirements:

Must be at least 18 years of age Must have reliable transportation Must be able to work independently Agree to background and reference check TB testing, drug testing Must complete all on-boarding training and requirements Therapy Dog certification UTD rabies vaccination

Heartland Hospice is looking to expand its superstar team of volunteers from Racine and Kenosha counties at its Kenosha location. 

A hospice Vigil Volunteer is one of Heartland's most special and fulfilling opportunities. Vigil volunteers may sit bedside with a patient who is in their last hours of life. Support may involve prayer (reading from the Bible or other material that is comforting to the patient), providing caregiver relief to the family (allowing them to step away and take a momentary break), or simply being present—providing comfort and peace of mind to all that the patient is not alone. Our Vigil Volunteer program is more of an “on-call” opportunity; vigil support is based upon request of a patient’s family or care-giving team. Scheduling of vigil takes into consideration the volunteer’s location, comfort level, and availability.

Musician volunteers enrich the lives of hospice patients by sharing their talents during regular visits. In addition to providing song/singing, volunteers provide much-needed socialization and get the privilege of hearing someone's life story.

Do you want to gain experience in an office setting? Looking to sharpen your skills and strengthen your resume? Or, maybe you have some extra time on your hands and enjoy clerical tasks and projects? Whatever the case may be, we can help! Our office volunteers have a significant impact on our agency by assisting with various clerical tasks that allow our staff more time to provide direct care to your hospice patients and their families.

Needs for office volunteers include, but are not limited to: assisting with filing, mailings, packet-making, inventory of paperwork, working and facing supplies, and so on. Those who are competent in their computer skills may have the chance to work on special projects such as creating posts, flyers, and other marketing materials for the volunteer program.

Are you someone who likes to talk on the phone? Are you the friend that checks in on the friend group quite often? Are you the family member that makes sure everyone else has gotten a plate before you grab yours? That feeling you get when you put others first is the feeling you get when you call a patient's family just to make sure they are all set for the weekend! That feeling is even stronger when you call a bereaved family and remind them that we are here for them!

Tuck-In Call volunteers provide weekly phone calls to patients who live at home. These calls are to ensure that all medications, supplies, equipment, and any other needs they might have are met before the weekend comes. Calls must be completed on Thursday afternoon or Friday mornings and must be completed in the Mount Pleasant Office. 

Bereavement Call volunteers complete our 6-month check in call with our families. These check in calls are to see how our families are doing, remind them we are here for them, and help them get the resources they need when necessary. Calls are done once a month (if needed) and can be done around your availability! These calls must be completed in the Mount Pleasant Office.
