Volunteer: Children's Vision Screener

Become a Certified Children's Vision Screener! Help us identify children with potential vision problems and set them on the road to healthy vision through children's vision screenings in your community.

Founded in 1958 by a group of dedicated volunteers, Prevent Blindness Wisconsin's mission is to prevent blindness and preserve sight in Wisconsin communities. We envision a Wisconsin where everyone enjoys a lifetime of healthy vision and we work toward this goal by providing free, direct sight-saving services, such as vision screenings, throughout the state.

Volunteers help with vision screenings at schools and childcare centers throughout greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County that otherwise do not have the capacity to screen the children at their schools and centers. All volunteers are required to attend a Prevent Blindness Wisconsin sponsored Children's Vision Screener Training. The training will go over how to vision screen school-age and preschool age children and the last step is to attend a short virtual volunteer orientation. The children’s vision screening certification is good for 3 years. No previous experience with health care or vision screenings is necessary. This is an opportunity for individual adults, teens and small groups (maximum size of 5).

Volunteers are required to complete and pass a background check and Children’s Vision Screener Training before volunteering. To sign up for our online training, please email Breanna at breanna@pbwi.org for the sign-up link.

Time commitment: Vision screenings typically take place on weekday mornings. Depending on classroom size, screenings take between 1 and 3 hours. Vision screenings start in September and go through May.

Please contact Breanna Reckamp, Director of Operations, at breanna@pbwi.org or (414) 765-0505 to learn more and to sign up for a vision screener training.

Volunteer: Remote Volunteer Opportunity with Aurora Health Care

Are you interested in making a positive impact on inpatients in our hospitals without leaving your home? We would love to have you on our team!  We are looking for volunteers to call inpatients while in the hospital to welcome them to our care, relay visitation guidelines and inquire how their stay has been.

Concierge Admission Program (CAP) include the following tasks for volunteers:

Remotely, volunteers call patients using a well-developed script and introduce themselves, inquire how their patient experience has been since they arrived and explains the hospitals visitation guidelines. If yes, volunteers will place these calls. If/when patients relay needs or concerns, we connect with nursing staff at the end of the patient call to assist in real time with the need/concern. If/when patients recognize staff for providing exceptional care, we send recognition emails to the staff members with a copy to their leader.

Advocate Aurora computer access is provided for all volunteers.

Training consists of 4-6 hours. Volunteers will learn to place and conduct patient calls with the guidance of our training coordinator, and when the volunteer feels confident with the call script and all questions/concerns are answered, they may begin to make calls on their own.

Volunteer: Companions for Hospice Kenosha, Racine, and Walworth

Companions for Hospice Patients

Have a free hour or two?  Warm your heart and the hearts of our patients as a hospice volunteer! Not a day goes by when someone couldn’t benefit from a helping hand, a friendly voice, or a sincere smile from a hospice volunteer.  Aurora at Home Hospice is seeking volunteers to lend this type of support to patients and their families.

Individuals donate some of their free time to hospice providing necessary support and comfort for the patients and their families. Volunteers are an invaluable, vital component of our hospice program. We simply couldn’t function without them. Patients enjoy the fresh company and the friendly support that volunteers are able to offer. Listening is one of the most important things a volunteer can do.

Often, during the course of an illness, the primary caregiver and other family members begin to feel the stress of the situation. Volunteers offer the caregivers an opportunity to take a breather while feeling comfortable knowing that the patient is in good hands.

The Aurora Health at Home-Hospice is a not-for-profit organization designed to provide services for terminally ill patients and their families. Our office works with patients and their families in the Walworth, Kenosha and Racine counties. We will accommodate your schedule and provide flexible hours. The Aurora Health at Home-Hospice provides hands-on training.

Volunteer: Volunteer Together With a Friend

Volunteer with a Friend   The team at Aurora Health at Home Hospice is looking to grow its volunteer team. Not a day goes by when someone couldn’t benefit from a helping hand, a friendly voice, or a sincere smile from a hospice volunteer.

Perhaps you and a friend could share your time together to make a difference in the life of a terminally ill person and their family. There is no health care experience necessary, just a caring heart.  Experience personal gratification knowing you have made a difference.

There are numerous ways you can help as hospice volunteers. Some of these include companionship, playing games, reading and sitting with people in their home to provide a break for the family.

If you want to make a positive difference in someone’s life - this may be for you.

Volunteers are trained based on their interests. We accommodate the schedules of our volunteers and set your hours. Aurora Health at Home Hospice offers a "hands-on" training opportunity.

BeLEAF Survivors Sexual Assault Services (SAS) provides a number of short-term and ongoing services to survivors of sexual assault and their support people, including a 24-hour crisis line, 24-hour hospital response, personal advocacy, legal advocacy, counseling, and support groups. We also provide bilingual advocacy services for Spanish-speaking survivors.

BeLEAF’s Stop Child Abuse & Neglect (SCAN) program provides school-based child abuse awareness curriculums to students at your school/s. Lessons are presented to preschool and kindergarten children, and 2nd, 4th and 6th grade students. The information provided is developmentally appropriate and aims to reduce child victimization and the stigma of abuse by teaching children to recognize dangerous and abusive situations, distinguish between safe and unsafe touches, say “no” to unwanted advances, encourage children to tell an adult about such episodes, and assure children that such incidents are never the fault of the child.

Children have the right to feel safe. Without a safe start, they face barriers to success and the cycle of pain continues.   Call us today  (262) 619-1634, volunteer today.  You may help a child today.

United Way of Racine County is committed to improving the health, education, financial stability and access to basic needs of every person in our community. Our volunteer-driven community investment process is designed to fund programs that are clearly aligned with United Way’s target outcomes in the area of health, education, financial stability and basic needs.

Volunteer: Become a Walking School Bus Conductor!

What is a Walking School Bus?

The Walking School Bus (WSB) is a partnership between United Way of Racine County and Racine Unified School District offering students a safe and fun way to walk to school with adult supervision. Each "bus" walks along a predetermined route with two adult leaders making various stops along the way to pick up children near their homes and walk them to school.

Become a Walking School Bus volunteer

We are seeking volunteers interested in supporting student walking routes to school at Julian Thomas Elementary and Knapp Elementary. Each route will have two adults and you may be required to walk up to two miles. Volunteers can sign up from as little, to as many routes as they would like - once a month is preferred. All volunteers will be trained ahead of time.  All volunteers must be complete a background check approved through the United Way of Racine County. It's a great way to get your steps in, while helping our young people get to school in a safe and fun way!

Questions may be directed to walking school bus coordinator Stuart Wood.

Why Volunteer? Ensuring students get to school safely lowers the risk of truancy for students and increases attendance. Walking students to school takes the burden of school drop off and pick up off of families who may have conflicting schedules. Volunteers form positive relationships with students and create positive change in their communities. Walking is a great form of exercise for volunteers and students!

When kids read, they succeed.

Through third grade, children learn to read. From fourth grade on, they read to learn. Research shows that third-grade reading proficiency is a powerful predictor of later academic achievement. A student who is not at least moderately successful in reading by the third grade is unlikely to graduate from high school. When kids read, they can succeed.

Schools of Hope, a United Way-led initiative in partnership with Racine Unified School District, local businesses and community members, provides young children with tutors on a regular basis to increase reading achievement in the early grades. Tutoring sessions take place during the school day. All training and supplies are provided. No experience necessary. Tutors are asked to commit to a minimum of 30 minutes per week during the school year (October through May).

Volunteer: Support a hospice patient in their greatest hour of need: become a vigil volunteer!

Heartland Hospice is looking to expand its superstar team of volunteers from Racine and Kenosha counties at its Kenosha location.

A hospice Vigil Volunteer is one of Heartland's most special and fulfilling opportunities. Vigil volunteers may sit bedside with a patient who is in their last hours of life. Our Vigil Volunteer program is more of an “on-call” opportunity; vigil support is based upon request of a patient’s family or care-giving team. Scheduling of vigil takes into consideration the volunteer’s location, comfort level, and availability.

If you live in Racine, Kenosha, or Walworth county, would like to learn more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity, and are interested in providing support to hospice patients during their greatest hour of need, please contact Volunteer Coordinator at 262-652-4730.

Heartland Hospice is looking for independent, charming, and goal orientated individuals to join our team of Office Volunteers!

Are you someone who likes to talk on the phone? Are you the friend that checks in on the friend group quite often? Are you the family member that makes sure everyone else has gotten a plate before you grab yours? That feeling is even stronger when you call a bereaved family and remind them that we are here for them!

Tuck-In Call volunteers provide weekly phone calls to patients who live at home. These calls are to ensure that all medications, supplies, equipment, and any other needs they might have are met before the weekend comes. Calls must be completed on Thursday afternoon or Friday mornings and must be completed in the Mount Pleasant Office.

Bereavement Call volunteers complete our 6-month check in call with our families. These check in calls are to see how our families are doing, remind them we are here for them, and help them get the resources they need when necessary. Calls are done once a month (if needed) and can be done around your availability! These calls must be completed in the Mount Pleasant Office.

Call Heartland Volunteer coordinator today to learn more about this unique opportunity!
