Opportunities From: Volunteer Center of Racine County, Inc.

Volunteer: AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP - Senior Companion Program (ages 55+ only)

This opportunity is for seniors 55+ to volunteer.

Hours are flexible.

Senior Companion Program, Inc. – we believe companionship is vital to everyone’s happiness and well-being.  Our hope is that nobody lives out their later years feeling alone, everyone deserves friendship.

With respect for each person's dignity and unique characteristics, the Senior Companion Program matches one of our volunteers with a client. That volunteer then visits the same person every week.  Our volunteers and their companion usually find common ground quickly, and their relationship builds from there!

Volunteers might spend an hour in conversation; you might play a board or card game, do a puzzle, read aloud, watch a TV program, have a snack, listen to music, or do a craft …the possibilities are endless.

Volunteer today.

Volunteer: Volunteer at Halo

Individual or Group Opportunities Paint and fix up a room - One of our favorite volunteer opportunities! We are looking for volunteers to adopt one of our sleeping rooms, or a common area within the shelter, in need of refurbishing. There has been significant wear and tear to many rooms throughout the shelter over the years. By helping to paint a client room you can restore well-used rooms to their original condition or better - helping make clients feel more comfortable.  Restoration can include painting, repairing cracks in walls, replacing ceiling tile, floor tile, and light bulbs, or waxing or finishing floors. Additionally, you can choose to donate or replace dressers, under the bed storage containers, pillows, bedding, coat racks for the doors, standing clothing racks, air fresheners, shower caddies, shower flip flops, wall mirrors, or decorative wall hangings.  Donation Drives - You, your family, your co-workers, your school, your church... any individual or group can host a donation drive for personal care items needed at the shelter daily. Successful donation drives have included Diapers, Deodorant Sticks, New Socks & Undergarments, Food Drives and more. Use Facebook and other social media to spread the word. A great alternative to receiving gifts on your birthday. Tutoring - We want to support our children's educational needs.  Often, children who are experiencing homelessness have fallen behind in school or are at significant risk of falling behind. We want these children to succeed and being a tutor can make a big difference in a child's educational journey and life.  Children's Activities - Make a difference in the lives of the children who are in shelter by coordinating a fun, memorable activity such as storytelling, game night, musical performance, sing-a-longs, outdoor picnics, arts and crafts and more. Nighttime activities between 5-8pm are needed most, but we'll work around your schedule!  Children's Summer Enrichment Program - Volunteers and camp counselors are needed for our free, 8-week educational program for children in 1st through 5th grades. This is an ideal program for youth and young adults to gain valuable experience working with children. Meal Makers - Prepare and serve a meal for shelter residents to enjoy at breakfast, lunch or dinner. This opportunity is best for groups of 6 or more and is a great team-building opportunity for employers. HALO serves over 11,000 meals each month.  Meal makers for dinner are especially needed. View our Meal Maker information to learn more about what it takes to be a Meal Maker. Assist Staff - Be a friendly, welcoming face at either one of the front desk intake areas, assist staff by answering phones and completing small daily tasks. Volunteers with computer skills are always needed for staff assistance and data entry. Special Events & Fundraising - Help us make our special events successful and fun.  Become a HALO ambassador at community events.   Passion Fundraising - Turn what you love to do—your passion—into a fundraiser for HALO Gardening, Groundskeeping, & Facility - Help us maintain the exterior and grounds of our 22,000 square foot facility with gardening, painting, lawn care, etc.   Join a Board Committee - We are always looking for people who have the heart to help those experiencing homelessness to join our Board or serve on a Board Committee.  Finance Fund Development Human Resources Programs and Services PR/Marketing Events Building

Volunteer: Special Events Coordinators!

Special Events Coordinators Needed!

Like to plan parties? We've got the volunteer opportunity for you!

Milwaukee Pets Alive isn’t just another rescue. We are here to shape rescue. Join us as a Special Events Coordinator (part of our Special Events Team)! There’s never been a better time to volunteer with us if you are looking to be a part of something bigger than yourself - help us as we work towards building a sanctuary so we can serve even MORE special animals and make SE WI No Kill! This is a monumental undertaking and we are looking for TEAMMATES to make this vision a reality! Special Events are going to be hugely important to not only raise the funds necessary to care for the animals already in our program AND build a sanctuary, but also to reach more people in our community to help us do it!

Special Events Coordinators, under the direction of MPA's Special Events Team Lead, will plan and ensure the execution of special events/fundraising events throughout the year that are important for increasing awareness about our organization, the population of special needs/considerations animals we serve, and the important work we are doing for the animals of Southeast Wisconsin and are integral to raising the funds necessary to support that work.

Each MPA Special Events Coordinator will be responsible for (and must be able to commit to) creating/planning/leading/executing/managing/marketing at least 1 special event per year and will also assist the other MPA Special Events Coordinators with the events that they are leading.

Choose from one of our event ideas to take the lead of (that we're looking for a Special Events Coordinator to take charge of!) or use your imagination to create a new, fun event of your own creation that our supporters will want to attend and that will attract new people to come learn about our organization and engage them to be supporters themselves!

Special Events Coordinators will also be a part of the committee to plan a major annual organizational event.

At the discretion of the Special Events Lead, the Special Events Coordinators may be asked to attend Special Events Team meetings from time to time to share ideas, plan, and coordinate with the rest of the Special Events Team (your teammates!) to let them know what you are working on so you all can function as a team!

Volunteer tasks are done around the volunteer’s own schedule - when it’s convenient for you - morning, day, or night - though some tasks will involve the occasional coordination of your schedule with the schedule of others (such as for meetings, phone calls, when collaborating with other team members, etc.).

Previous special events coordination experience not required - just passion, desire, and drive to create fun parties and things for our supporters to do while also helping the animals we serve!

We are looking for several volunteers to fill several Special Events Coordinator roles with MPA. The right individuals will strongly believe in our mission, vision, and core values and have a sincere interest in elevating our organization, extending our reach, and growing with us (so commitment and dedication are important).

We are an entirely volunteer-run rescue. Everything you see was created and accomplished by a volunteer! We have no employees, so all volunteers should be self-motivated, be a self-starter with initiative, drive, ambition, and are able to work independently. One of the general qualities we are looking for in any teammate in this rescue are those who are "Go-givers" - people who want to make a difference in the world and for others and know the greatest impact we make is usually not the work we are paid to do in our 9-5, but that what we choose to do because in our hearts, we want to make others' time on this planet easier and better! How our organization is structured requires that all volunteers be able to accept direction to produce cohesive messaging, vision, results, and practices consistent with that of the overall organization as a whole and then take that direction to lead in the execution of their piece of the organization. Individual must be able to follow through on their commitments. The Special Events Coordinator should be interested in planning parties, events, or just fun things to do and be in touch with what type of events would be fun, and engaging, for our supporters to attend so they do come out and support us at them (and so we draw in new supporters)! MPA is looking for a volunteer to fill this role who recognizes the importance of working on behalf of the special animals we serve and will work hard for them as they are counting on us to save their lives!

When every person does a little to make a difference, together, we make change. Reaching as many people as possible to let them know we’re here and the important work we are doing for an important population of animals that have no one else but us is directly proportionate to what we can achieve, and the number of animals we can save. The more volunteer help we have, the more animals we can help. It’s that simple. Will YOU help? If you want to help and can fulfill the needs we are looking for in a volunteer for this role, please email volunteer@milwaukeepetsalive.org or reply to this posting.

Please help us do more for the animals of this community! Thank you.

Milwaukee Pets Alive (MPA) is an all-volunteer, No Kill, 501c3 special needs and considerations rescue that focuses on saving those local animals that have been passed over by, would not be accepted into, or would be killed by other rescues and shelters because of their needs and considerations and would have no other option for life except for through our organization. These animals may be shy, scared, under-socialized, injured, aged, differently-abled, have medical needs, or need extra resources - all deserve the chance to be loved and cherished. And all deserve time, understanding, patience, and good, comprehensive veterinary care to help them get happy, healthy, and reach their highest potential. Their lives are important.

Our mission, through our work aforementioned and through comprehensive programs and resources to educate and help community members help the animals in their own lives (thereby preventing more animals from entering the shelter system), is to end the killing of homeless companion animals in southeast WI. The population we rescue comprises those that continue to die in the greatest numbers in our community.

Our vision is for southeast WI to be one of the safest communities in the United States for companion animals.

We couldn’t help these special animals of our community that we do if not for the wonderful people who volunteer their time and talents!

Are you ready to do more for the animals of YOUR community? Become a part of our team! Reach out to us today!

Volunteer: Lead Community Outreach Volunteer!

Lead Community Outreach Volunteer needed!

Milwaukee Pets Alive isn’t just another rescue. We are here to shape rescue. Join us as our Lead Community Outreach Volunteer (leader of our MPA Community Outreach Team) - a part of our Leadership Team!

Our vision is for Southeast Wisconsin to be one of the safest communities in the United States for companion animals. While our organization is proudly No Kill (and always has been since day 1), our community (and many of the "shelters" in it) is NOT No Kill. We can’t achieve our vision until the community as a whole becomes No Kill. TheLead Community Outreach Volunteer is going to play an integral role towards this end as 3 components of the No Kill Equation (TNR support, Low/no cost spay/neuter, and Pet Retention [education] - which are also components of our organization’s mission) will be pillars in the work they do.

The Lead Community Outreach Volunteer is a leadership role and the individual will be an ambassador of the MPA organization, creating a community - both internal and external - that emphasizes the important work we do for the special animals we serve and exemplifies how each volunteer’s active involvement helps us achieve more for more precious lives. Our leadership volunteers each manage one piece of the organization. Our leadership volunteers together (the Leadership Team) orchestrate an amazing whole doing great works in our community...and our world! The Lead Community Outreach Volunteer must be outgoing, ambitious, personable, enjoy cultivating and building relationships, and be able to dream big to create and manage programming that currently does not exist in our community but is necessary to save countless lives and reach No Kill status in our region. The Lead Community Outreach Volunteer should also be enthusiastic and excited to inspire and motivate both the Community Outreach Coordinator volunteers they are managing, as well as the community members, businesses, and leaders we will be partnering with to achieve our work and those we will serve with it.

The Lead Community Outreach Volunteer will:

In collaboration with the Leadership Team, develop a community outreach plan to include programing that will work towards the goal of a No Kill community and that meets organizational goals and furthers the mission of the organization. Oversee MPA’s "The Lily Project." Oversee MPA’s TNR Support Program. Initiate low/no cost spay/neuter initiatives and events in the community where they are most needed. In line with MPA’s efforts to help all animals we share our world with (not just those in our rescue) as well as for pet retention to keep animals with their families where they belong (a key component of the No Kill Equation), organize educational opportunities on important and relevant topics such as feline and canine nutrition, behavior, etc. Support, guide, lead, manage, and assist MPA Community Outreach Coordinator volunteers in executing the programs aforementioned and make them robust and impactful! Work with Marketing Team in marketing community outreach and educational events. Take stock of voids in the community preventing it from reaching No Kill status and develop programs to fill the gaps. Communicate with all members of the MPA Community Outreach Team regularly to answer questions and make sure all are actively engaged and regularly working on components of the community outreach plan, and that they are appreciated for their hard work! Participate in once-a-month Leadership Team meetings. Will coordinate any additional meetings for Community Outreach Team or other volunteers as needed for proper planning and execution of components of the community outreach plan they are working on or for collaboration on projects. Be creative and innovative! Dream big! Create other programs to help the people and animals of our community in line with realizing our vision of being one of the safest communities in the U.S. for companion animals.

Volunteer tasks are done around the volunteer’s own schedule - when it’s convenient for you - morning, day, or night - though some tasks will involve the occasional coordination of your schedule with the schedule of others (such as for meetings, phone calls, etc.).

Prior community outreach experience not required - but a strong drive, passion, and desire to make SE WI renowned for being a safe place for animals, where they all have a RIGHT to life - regardless of age, ability, needs, health, socialization, etc. IS! Prior leadership experience preferred, though not required if you have the other qualities previously mentioned.

We are looking for one person to fill this role. The right individual will strongly believe in our mission, vision, and core values and have a sincere interest in elevating our organization, extending our reach, and growing with us (so commitment and dedication are important).

Volunteer: Vegan Bake Sale/Talk Table Coordinators (Marketing Team)!

Vegan Bake Sale/Talk Table Coordinators (Marketing Team) Needed!

Milwaukee Pets Alive isn’t just another rescue. We are here to shape rescue. Join us as a Vegan Bake Sale/Talk Table Coordinator (part of our Marketing Team)!

Community. It’s one of our core values. A pillar of Milwaukee Pets Alive. Social media is nice, but there has to be more than that. It may be how we learn about things, but it’s not where we make true connections. And many don’t use, or are ceasing to use social media. We miss out on reaching those people with our important work if everything is online. We’ve got to get face to face with people.

That’s where we can do more, and do better for our animals and the people that love them. We have a wealth and wide breadth of knowledge to share - and want to help others with it. We’ve been rescuing animals with special needs and considerations for almost a decade - animals that many turn from, but we run to. As such, we have experiences others don’t have and want to share what we’ve learned to help people with challenges they may be experiencing. We also believe in the adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Education, knowledge, and wisdom shared can go a long ways towards that end.

Face to face is also the way others can help us do better for those animals who have no one - the abused, neglected, and abandoned. The injured, the ill, the differently-abled. The shy, the scared, the under-socialized. And the un-socialized who should never enter the shelter system, but when they all-too-often do, today, they meet certain death. They would have no one...if they didn’t have MPA. We are doing what no one else does in our community (and will have the capability to do so much more with a sanctuary!) - filling a very important void.

We can help people help the animals that they love, and they can help us and the animals we serve when they learn about the important work we’re doing in our community. This starts with building relationships. All relationships start with a conversation.

We need a lot more active supporters, and there are so many people that need guidance with their own animals and those they share this world with (and helping people help their animals keeps animals out of the shelter system - it’s part of the No Kill Equation)! We want to regularly meet and talk with more of our community members! It can be hard to ask questions...and some feel shy just walking up to a table to seek information or see what’s going on, so we have the perfect solution: a combination vegan bake sale/talk table! It’s our non-melty version of an ice cream social. Our current supporters LOVE baking for bake sales, and people can’t resist checking out the variety of homemade goodies - the perfect ice-breaker to create new supporters, and hear people’s stories opening a door to how we might be able to help them help their animals, too! It's baking with a purpose, y'all!

Why a "vegan" bake sale? Because we care about all the animals (and people) we share this world with. We serve a population of carnivorous animals (we rescue mostly cats and dogs), but humans are not carnivores (take a look at your teeth, and then compare them to your cat or dog). Humans do not need to eat animals or their by-products. In talking to and getting to know more people in our community, we want to take the opportunity to introduce them to the deliciousness, and kindess, of eating vegan - and there is no more tasty introduction than vegan sweet treats! *Please note, while the baked goods we will be selling at these sales will be vegan, our Bake Sale Coordinators do not need to be vegan. But once you are able to see, and taste, how awesome vegan goodies are (and that anything can be made vegan) don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to go vegan yourself!

We’re looking for SIX Vegan Bake Sale/Talk Table Coordinators as part of our Marketing Team (please note, YOU do not need to be vegan. The goodies we sell will be vegan. But you just may want to become plant-based after heading up a bake-sale where all the deliciousness is made from plants!). Each Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating 2 Vegan Bake Sale/Talk Tables with an interested host business every year (so when we are fully staffed with 6 Coordinators, we will be able to hold a Vegan Bake Sale/Talk Table every month!), coordinating enough volunteers to bake for their sales and the drop off of their baked goods, setup, staffing the sale (taking payment for baked goods sold, greeting people, talking about the organization, etc.), and tear down of the sale. We’ll have experienced animal care volunteers present to answer questions from people that stop by the sale. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to learn from the best on animal care, behavior, and advocacy.

We were so excited about all the outreach we can accomplish in this role that we forgot to mention that these bake sales will also generate much needed donations to care for the special population of animals we serve as well as help fund the sanctuary we are working to build!

The coordination tasks are done around the volunteer’s own schedule - when it’s convenient for you - morning, day, or night - though some tasks will involve the occasional coordination of your schedule with the schedule of others (such as meetings or phone calls) and then you must be available to staff the Vegan Bake Sale/Talk Table you coordinate and help your fellow Coordinators staff theirs whenever possible.

One of the general qualities we are looking for in any teammate in this rescue are those who are "Go-givers" - people who want to make a difference in the world and for others and know the greatest impact we make is usually not the work we are paid to do in our 9-5, but that what we choose to do because in our hearts, we want to make others’ time on this planet easier and better! How our organization is structured requires that all volunteers be able to accept direction to produce cohesive messaging, vision, results, and practices consistent with that of the overall organization as a whole and then take that direction to lead in the execution of their tasks. Individual must be able to follow through on their commitments. Vegan Bake Sale/Talk Table Coordinators should also be outgoing, personable, enthusiastic, and love people as this is an outreach/marketing role to reach and talk to people! MPA is looking for volunteers to fill this role who recognize the importance of working on behalf of the special animals we serve and will work hard for them as they are counting on us to save their lives!

The right individuals will strongly believe in our mission, vision, and core values and have a sincere interest in elevating our organization, extending our reach, and growing with us (so commitment and dedication are important).

Research foundations that have applicable funds to our work. Be a part of the capital campaign for the sanctuary. Send out appeal letters to donors. Distribute acknowledgement letters and tax receipts to donors. Oversee donation box program. Oversee our inkind donations program. Manage Fundraising & Development Team volunteers who are coordinating various fundraisers and development activities. Communicate with all members of the MPA Fundraising & Development Team regularly to answer questions and make sure all are actively engaged and regularly working on components of the fundraising and development plan, and that they are appreciated for their hard work! Participate in once-monthly Leadership Team meetings. Will coordinate any additional meetings for Fundraising & Development Team or other volunteers as needed for proper planning and execution of components of the fundraising & development plan they are working on or for collaboration on projects. Research different community fundraising opportunities. Oversee grant writers.

Volunteer tasks are done around the volunteer’s own schedule - when it’s convenient for you - morning, day, or night - though some tasks will involve the occasional coordination of your schedule with the schedule of others (such as for meetings, phone calls, etc.).

Fundraising/development experience preferred though not required if candidate possesses other leadership experience and has a strong drive/passion for development and fundraising.

We are looking for one person to fill this role. The right individual will strongly believe in our mission, vision, and core values and have a sincere interest in elevating our organization, extending our reach, and growing with us (so commitment and dedication are important).

We are an entirely volunteer-run rescue. Everything you see was created and accomplished by a volunteer! We have no employees, so all volunteers should be self-motivated, be a self-starter with initiative, drive, ambition, and are able to work independently. One of the general qualities we look for in any teammate in this rescue are those who are "Go-Givers" - people who want to make a difference in the world and for others and know the greatest impact we make is often not the work we are paid to do in our 9-5, but that what we choose to do because in our hearts, we want to make others' time on this planet easier and better! How our organization is structured requires that all volunteers be able to accept direction to produce cohesive messaging, vision, results, and practices consistent with that of the overall organization as a whole and then take that direction to lead in the execution of their piece of the organization. Individual must be able to follow through on their commitments. The Lead Fundraising & Development Volunteer should also be personable and organized to stay on top of managing relationships and always letting them know how much they mean to us - we would not exist, and cannot build this sanctuary, without donors!

Volunteer: Volunteer Friend, Our Harmony Club Racine

One of the primary purposes of Our Harmony Club is to provide respite care for caregivers.  Respite care offers rest for caregivers and gives those individuals time for themselves.   During the 6 hours while their loved one is at club, they are able to go grocery shopping, spend time with friends, or just do nothing.  That break is critical for them as it enables them to rejuvenate and refresh from the stresses associated with being a caregiver.

With the exception of the Director, the program is 97% run by volunteers.  These individuals are the foundation and backbone of our organization.  These individuals are generally retired people from our community who want to give back while having fun and making a difference in the lives of others.  They interact with our clients by assisting with crafts and games, taking part in conversations, and just being their friend for the day.  Other volunteers will lead games and exercises while others will help in the kitchen preparing meals and snacks.  Our program would not be possible if it were not for the countless people who dedicate their time every month at Our Harmony Club.

A day at Our Harmony Club consists of up to 6 hours of respite for the caregiver, from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Guests and volunteers enjoy reminiscing about the “old days”, working on crafts, doing puzzles, participating in sing-a-longs, and just simply spending time together!  Whether they come as a guest or a volunteer, all who attend benefit from the social, emotional, and physical aspects of our program.

As a result of participating in Young Leaders Academy, participants achieve success in core subjects (tests, grades, etc.), demonstrate positive school behavior, attend school regularly, and improve social functioning. In addition to the Young Achievers program, the Young Leaders Academy also includes programming for elementary school students through the School Achievers program for Grades 2-5 and high school students through the Teen Achievers program for Grades 9-12.

The Young Achievers program for 6th – 8th graders prepares students for the academic rigor of high school and beyond. The program combines the self-discipline of the overall Young Leaders Academy program with the independence of the Teen Achievers, the component for high school students who participate in the Young Leaders Academy. Young Achievers allows students to participate according to their interests, and provides opportunities to enhance their academic progress, increase existing skills, and pursue their interests. Participation in the program will result in increased school attendance and development of positive peer relationships. This program component takes place at the George Bray Y Branch. Program hours are typically Monday through Wednesday 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Up to 50 participants are served annually.

Students are referred to the program by their school teacher or school leadership; parents may also contact the Racine Family YMCA's Young Leaders Academy Coordinator to enroll their child.
